Christmas 2016 and 100 Club Results

Christmas Events at St Bart’s 2016 Many visitors were welcomed into church from late November, when a packed church took part in a short service before the village Christmas lights’  switch-on, to the last service on Christmas Day.   Carol Services, schools’ and preschool’s Christmas services, Christingle – church was full on each occasion.   On 3 December, the first Ripponden  Christmas Festival took place with the Chair of Ripponden Parish Council and Consort in attendance in the church.    Father Christmas was a very popular attraction in the community centre where there were various activities for children while they waited to … Read more…

January: Epiphany Supper & Carol Service The end of the Epiphany Season in late January was marked by the Epiphany Supper in the Community Centre and the well – attended Epiphany Carol Service the following evening.   As usual, the Supper was much enjoyed by around thirty people.  The speaker was Trevor Simpson who gave an entertaining and well-received talk which touched on some of his notable achievements: setting up the hospital radio in Calderdale in 1981, international football referee and author of the ‘Small Town, Saturday Night’ books, amongst others. Lent Groups at the Vicarage, 7.30 pm.   Everyone welcome! … Read more…

Autumn & Winter 2015/16

Rushbearing Sunday On 6 September, the sun shone and continued to shine the whole day.  For once, the wind was not too much of a problem as St Bart’s set up for a long day, the biggest casualty being the Play Your Cards Right which periodically blew across the grass.  The Rushbearing Committee had previously advised that the cart would be arriving in Ripponden 40 minutes later than usual, at 5.25 pm, but it didn’t stop people turning up in the early afternoon for cream teas or a bbq, to browse the stalls and try their hand at the (rather … Read more…

Summer 2015

The result of the 100 club draw  on 5 July was:   1st prize S Sotnyk (26) 2nd T Simpson (52) 3rd D Butler (45)   That afternoon we had a working party in the community centre car park to tidy up the area, now that Trefoil members are no longer able to look after it.  We had a break for tea and cake, after which we were suddenly  and dramatically rained off.   However, even an hour and a half made a difference.   The previous week we held the Annual Duck Race & Garden Party. The weather forecast … Read more…

Late Spring/Early Summer 2015

We Peaked! Saturday 23rd May was a lovely sunny day – just right for attempting the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge. In total 10 of us completed the walk to raise funds for the St Paul’s Children’s Project and we hope to have raised £2500 by the time all of the sponsorship is in. The Project is a small (Ripponden based) charity providing an education to Orphaned children in Eastern Zambia. We had an early start to climb Pen y Ghent before most folk were out of their Bank Holiday beds! Then a long walk to Ribblehead where we were met … Read more…

Easter 2015 and the Flood

On Palm Sunday, we joined Stones Methodists for Communion before processing down the hill (in the rain) behind the cross, to finish the service at St Bart’s.  A well-attended workshop for local school  children took place on Good Friday in the community centre and church was busy on Easter Sunday with many visitors.  The 100 club was drawn and the results were: 1. 34  S Spencer. 2. 22 J Hotson, 3. 8 J Wood. We are getting used to the extra space now that the reordering of the west end of church has begun and some pews have been removed.  In … Read more…

March 2015

After the service on 1 March a photograph was taken of the congregation at the West End of church.  In a few days’ time, the West End as we know it will change beyond recognition as the builders move in to install much-needed toilets and a kitchen.  The next few months will be both challenging and exciting as we follow developments.   The 100 club draw results for March are as follows:   1st prize J Wood (8) 2nd prize R Pettitt (49) 3rd prize C Dawson (53)
